Notes:

  • James Coleman Blackstone never spoke unless someone asked him a question. According to J.O. Blackstone Sr., James Coleman didn't talk about the family too much. He said that if you got anything out of him at all, you had to squeeze it out. He smoked a pipe. Died at the age of 70 of a stroke. He took one day off every year to take Papa (J.O. Blackstone Sr.) to the fair. He walked everywhere he went. He was almost 40 years old before he got married.  According to J.O. Blackstone Sr., James Coleman had 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

    His obituary said the following:

    MR. J.C. BLACKSTONE PASSES ON FRIDAY
    Funeral Services to be conducted Sunday
    Mr. James Coleman Blackstone, of 2004 Fenwick Street, died at the residence Friday night at 11:30 o'clock. 
    Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the the residence, Rev. A.S. Lundy ofticating and internment following in West View Cemetery.

    Pall bearers will be Earl Quarles, Tyre Cato, Norman Strickland, Richard Rhodes, L.C. Rabun and Al Reynolds.

    Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Blackstone; two brothers, L.N. Blackstone, Augusta, and W. O. Z. Blackstone, Savannah several nieces and nephews.

    According to J.O. Blackstone Sr., he spoke the Creek Indian language and English.

    The death certificate of James Coleman Blackstone lists Dock Blackstone, and Phleffein Ellis as James Coleman's mother and father. Also, according to his death certificate, R.E. Elliot and Sons, Augusta, GA, is the name of the undertaker. The death certificate names J.L. Blackstone as an informant. 

    James Coleman Blackstone's death is listed in his Bible which was passed on to his son, James Otto Blackstone Sr.  who passed this bible to James Otto Blackstone Jr., who gave it to a family member.  This bible contains lots of handwritten information of eyewitnesses of the births, deaths, and marriages of several generations of Blackstones.   The historical family data that is contained in this bible will probably never be seen again.  The moral of the story:  Be careful who you give historical family documents and genealogical information to or it may disappear forever.

    His death certificate said that he died of hypertension (high blood pressure), arterio sclorosis (hardening of the arteries), chronic nephritis (kidney disease), bilateral bronchial pneumonia, uremia (kidney failure probably caused by everything else.)

               

Susan (Susie) Ann Hutto

  • Susie was confined with cancer of the breast before she died at approximately age 33. She tied one end of a rope to the bed and the other end to Papa's (J.O. Blackstone Sr.) arm to keep him from running around in the neighborhood and getting into trouble. She worked in the King Textile Mill in Augusta and every morning she put Papa ( J.O. Sr). in the nursery for the textile worker's children. The picture we have is of her. She was known as a good woman, but also as a a fighter. According to J.O. Blackstone Sr., she punched his nursery school teacher because she hit him. Her death is recorded in the Bible of James Coleman Blackstone. According to the records of Elliots funeral home in Augusta, GA, Susie was living at 1630 Jones Street at the time of her death (July 5, 1917) , and the funeral was charged to James C. Blackstone.  Susie is buried in Westview Cemetery in Augusta in the Hutto Plot marked as Susie or Susan A. Hutto.  According to the funeral home records, she was living  at 1630 Jones Street at the time of her death.  James C. Blackstone paid for he burial.
